Studio – Portrait of the Artist as another Artist

In the Studio issue, Elise Noyez focuses on the photographic portrait of the artist as a (self-)representational strategy. Using a noteworthy photograph of early appropriation artist Elaine Sturtevant as a case study, Noyez discusses the changing standards of such photographic representations in relation to artist and artistic practice, as well as the appropriation of artistic images. This website is the outcome of the course Critical Issues in the Cultural Industries, supervised by prof. Wouter Davidts within the context of the Visual Arts, Media & Architecture MPhil program at VU University Amsterdam. Contributors to the site are the first and second year students of the research master enrolled in the course.
